THE PUB

The Boot Public House has been a proper Real Ale Pub on this site for hundreds of years. We are an award-winning pub which is in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, Oakademy of Excellence and Cask Marque Acredited. We are passionate about serving the best quality and variety of Real Ale. Our lunches stand out from the crowd and are 100% homemade using quality, British ingredients (served 12-4).

The Boot Pub, built around 1420 would have probably been witness to the battle of St Albans (22nd May, 1455). This was the first battle of the War of The Roses. Among other facts, St Albans is also home to the Ryder Cup (Golf), Hot Cross Buns were apparently invented at the Abbey, even Stephen Hawking was once a school pupil at the local school.

St Albans is a historic market town, which was a settlement of pre-Roman orgin-named Verulam by the ancient British Catuvellauni tribe-first recorded around AD43.

If you visit on a Saturday climb the 93 steps of our neighbouring Clock Tower to get a view of the pub from above and see St Albans Rooftops-on a good day you can see for miles…

The Hughes family have been running The Boot since 2004 and we now have 8 Real Ales (plus one served from the barrel on the bar at weekends). Local Real Ales include Oakham, Tring, Red Squirrel plus many many more… The Boot is in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, Oakademy of Excellence (Oakham Ales) and is Cask Marque accredited. Our ales change daily and we have a selection of quality lagers on draught including Staropramen (Prague) and Estrella (Barcelona).

We have a great selection of live music on a Sunday from 6PM with an occasional mid-week treat.

With exposed beams, low ceiling and log fire (winter months) the Boot offers a slice of history in the heart of the Cathedral Quater.

We are commited to reducing our carbon footprint and are constantly upgrading environmentally friendly equipment, lighting and ways to reduce our energy consumption.  We recently became 100 percent recycled-even our food waste is used to make green electricity.

FOOD & DRINK

Our Chef Fiona creates a selection of Classic British dishes-the kind you would expect from a quality public house. From the best Ploughman’s in town to Fionas famous Chilli Con Carne to a cracking Pie of the Day…

ALL of our meals are home-made using local butchers and local vegetable suppliers. Our Sausages are handmade at Hedge’s farm and our Sunday Lunch meats all come from Hedge’s Farm which is about 3 miles form the pub. All Fish on our menu is sourced from sustainable sources where possible and we do not use pre-prepared meals from other companies.

Sunday Lunches are served from 12:30-16:00 (First come, First serve-when it’s gone, it’s gone!!) with all meats from Hedge’s Farm, St Albans, a Homemade Nut Roast, Homemade Yorkshire Pudding & a selection of Vegetables.

Due to such high demand, we only take bookings at 12:30 on a Sunday.
